Description

Advanced Achilles Support with XELGO Liner Technology

The OPED VACOped XELGO Achilles Injury & Fracture Orthosis Boot is a specialized lower-leg and foot orthosis designed to immobilize the ankle in a prescribed position or allow movement through a clinician-selected range of motion.

It combines the established VACOped rigid shell, adjustable ankle mechanism and interchangeable sole system with OPED’s adaptive XELGO liner. This pump-free liner conforms around the foot, ankle and lower leg to create supportive total contact while accommodating individual anatomy and changes in swelling.

What Changed from the Original VACOped?

The VACOped shell, straps, adjustable range-of-motion mechanism and detachable sole system remain. However, the original removable fabric liner, separate vacuum cushion and hand pump have been replaced by the adaptive XELGO liner and quick-drying hygiene socks.

The result is a simpler fitting process with no vacuum pumping, no valve adjustment and no separate bead cushion to remove during routine cleaning.

How the XELGO Liner Works

The XELGO inlay contains adaptive beads combined with a highly viscous material. When the liner is fitted and pressure is applied, the beads settle around the patient’s anatomy and connect through multiple contact points.

This creates a stable, pressure-distributing interface between the lower leg and the rigid VACOped shell. The liner continues to adapt around the foot and ankle without requiring air to be removed manually.

Breathable DryClim® Material

The XELGO liner uses breathable DryClim® material to help transport humidity from the inside of the liner toward the outside. Internal foam and ventilation channels also help promote airflow and reduce heat build-up during extended wear.

Adjustable Ankle Position and Range of Motion

The VACOped ankle mechanism can be configured as a fixed-position orthosis or adjusted to permit movement through a controlled range. Available settings extend from 15° of dorsiflexion to 30° of plantar flexion in 5° increments.

The included adjustment keys allow the upper and lower range-of-motion limiters to be repositioned. These settings should only be changed according to instructions from the treating physician, surgeon, physiotherapist or orthopaedic professional.

Achilles Wedge Sole Requirement

When treating an Achilles tendon injury in a fixed plantar-flexed position between 15° and 30°, the supplied 15° Achilles wedge sole is used. Do not independently change the ankle angle, range-of-motion limiters or sole configuration.

Walking in a VACOped Boot? Consider an OPED EVENup Shoe Lift

A medical walking boot raises the injured side and can create a temporary difference in leg length. This uneven height may change the way you walk and place additional strain on the lower back, hips or knees.

The OPED EVENup Shoe Lift fits over the regular shoe on the non-injured side to help compensate for the height of the VACOped boot. Its adjustable lift may help create a more level and comfortable walking position during recovery.

Wear the EVENup on the shoe opposite the VACOped boot. Select the EVENup size according to the size, outsole length and shape of the regular shoe—not the size of the VACOped boot.

Between Two VACOped Sizes?

At the Small and Medium or Medium and Large size boundaries, OPED generally recommends selecting the smaller size when possible. Calf circumference and overall fit should also be considered. Contact The Physio Store before ordering when measurements are close to a size boundary.

Upgrade an Original VACOped Boot

The XELGO Liner Can Replace the Original VACOped Liner System

The original vacuum-style VACOped and the VACOped XELGO use the same standard shell and external components. An original VACOped can therefore be upgraded by removing both the old fabric liner and separate vacuum cushion and installing a same-size XELGO liner.

The old vacuum cushion and hand pump are not used after the conversion. A quick-drying, non-compressive hygiene sock should be worn between the skin and the XELGO liner.

Replacement XELGO liners are available separately in Small, Medium and Large. Always match the replacement liner size to the size marked on the existing VACOped.

Applying the XELGO Liner

  1. Put on one of the supplied non-compressive socks.
  2. Open the VACOped straps and remove the liner from the shell.
  3. Open the liner and gently loosen and smooth the ankle and sole areas to distribute the filling evenly.
  4. Place the foot completely into the back of the liner and secure the liner straps.
  5. Place the foot and liner into the VACOped shell with the heel positioned fully at the back.
  6. Attach the front cover and fasten the VACOped straps so they are secure but comfortable.
  7. Allow a short period for the adaptive liner to settle around the patient’s anatomy.

Managing a Pressure Point

When a pressure point develops, remove the liner and gently knead the affected sole or ankle area to loosen the filling. Smooth the beads evenly before reapplying the liner and shell. Persistent pain, numbness, skin irritation or pressure should be assessed by the treating healthcare professional.

Cleaning and Daily Care

Wear one of the supplied hygiene socks between the skin and liner and wash the socks regularly. The XELGO liner may be machine washed according to the care label and instructions supplied with the product.

Allow the liner and socks to air dry fully. Do not tumble dry the XELGO liner or socks. Because regional instructions may specify different wash temperatures, always follow the care label attached to the product supplied to you.

Do not bleach, iron or dry clean the liner. Store the orthosis and liner in a clean, dry location away from direct heat and sunlight.

Regularly inspect the skin for redness, bruising, pressure areas or breakdown. Stop weight bearing and contact the treating healthcare professional if pain, numbness, altered sensation, skin damage or unusual discomfort develops.

OPED directs that the Achilles wedge sole be used when treating an Achilles tendon injury at a fixed position between 15 and 30 degrees of plantar flexion.

Can I walk without a detachable sole attached to VACOped?

No. Never stand or walk in the VACOped shell unless the appropriate OPED detachable sole is securely attached.

What is included with the VACOped XELGO boot?

The boot includes the VACOped shell and front cover, one adaptive XELGO liner, two non-compressive hygiene socks, one rocker walking sole, one 15-degree Achilles wedge sole and one range-of-motion adjustment key.

Does VACOped XELGO fit either the left or right leg?

Yes. The VACOped XELGO is universal and may be fitted to either the left or right lower leg.

How do I select my VACOped XELGO size?

Select Small, Medium or Large using your men’s or women’s shoe size together with calf circumference and overall lower-leg fit.

What shoe sizes fit the Small VACOped XELGO?

Small generally fits men’s US shoe sizes 3.5 to 7.5 and women’s US shoe sizes 4.5 to 8.5.

What shoe sizes fit the Medium VACOped XELGO?

Medium generally fits men’s US shoe sizes 7.5 to 11.5 and women’s US shoe sizes 8.5 to 12.5.

What shoe sizes fit the Large VACOped XELGO?

Large generally fits men’s US shoe sizes 11.5 to 15 and women’s US shoe sizes 12.5 to 16.

What size should I choose if I am between VACOped sizes?

OPED generally recommends selecting the smaller size at the Small and Medium or Medium and Large boundary when possible. Contact The Physio Store before ordering when sizing is uncertain.

Where can I find the size of my existing VACOped boot?

The boot size is marked on the bottom of the detachable sole. A replacement XELGO liner must match the size of the existing VACOped shell.

Can I install a different-size XELGO liner in my VACOped shell?

No. The replacement XELGO liner should be the same size as the VACOped shell. A Small liner fits a Small boot, a Medium liner fits a Medium boot and a Large liner fits a Large boot.

How should the hygiene socks be used?

Wear a clean, non-compressive hygiene sock between the skin and the XELGO liner. Wash the socks regularly to help manage perspiration and keep the liner cleaner.

Can the XELGO liner be worn without a hygiene sock?

OPED recommends wearing a non-compressive hygiene sock between the skin and the XELGO liner. This helps protect the skin and manage moisture during extended wear.

Can VACOped XELGO be used in water?

Water use requires permission from the treating healthcare professional. A separate liner may be advisable when the orthosis is approved for use in water, and all components must be cleaned and dried thoroughly afterward.

Is VACOped XELGO made with natural rubber latex?

No. OPED states that the VACOped XELGO is not made with natural rubber latex.

Can VACOped be worn directly over an open wound?

No. Do not wear the orthosis directly over an open wound. Wounds must be appropriately dressed and managed according to medical instructions.

What should I do if the boot causes numbness, pressure or skin irritation?

Stop using or weight bearing through the boot and contact the treating healthcare professional if numbness, unusual pain, pressure areas, skin breakdown, discolouration or altered sensation develops.

Is VACOped XELGO designed for running or sports?

No. VACOped is not designed for running, jumping, fast walking or other dynamic sporting stresses.

Why might I need an EVENup shoe lift?

A medical walking boot can create a temporary height difference between the booted and non-booted sides. An EVENup shoe lift worn on the opposite shoe may help reduce this discrepancy when approved by the treating professional.

Can I buy the VACOped XELGO without a prescription?

Yes. A prescription is not normally required to purchase the boot. However, a valid prescription may be required for insurance reimbursement or to request applicable tax-exempt processing.
