Original VACOped Vacuum Achilles Boot — Clearance
The OPED VACOped Achilles Walking Boot is a specialized adjustable orthosis designed for clinician-directed treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures and selected foot, ankle and lower-leg injuries.
This is the original VACOped model with a removable terrycloth liner, separate vacuum-bead cushion and hand pump. The vacuum insert can be shaped around the foot, ankle and lower leg to provide supportive total contact while accommodating changes in swelling.
Clearance — Original Vacuum-Liner Model
This previous-generation VACOped is being cleared while quantities last. It uses the original vacuum cushion, hand pump and terrycloth liner system. The current replacement model is the OPED VACOped XELGO, which uses a pump-free adaptive liner.
Custom-Moulding Vacuum Technology
The original VACOped liner contains a separate cushion filled with thousands of small beads. Once the beads have been distributed around the foot and ankle, air is removed from the cushion with the supplied hand pump.
Creating a vacuum holds the beads in position and forms a supportive interface around the patient’s anatomy. The cushion can be softened, reshaped and vacuumed again when swelling changes or when a pressure-sensitive area needs to be accommodated.
Adjustable for Swelling and Pressure Areas
The vacuum cushion can be reopened by releasing the valve. The beads may then be redistributed around swelling, prominent anatomy or a pressure-sensitive area before the vacuum is restored with the pump.
Original VACOped Compared with VACOped XELGO
| Feature | Original VACOped | VACOped XELGO |
|---|---|---|
| Outer shell | Adjustable VACOped shell | Adjustable VACOped shell |
| Internal support | Separate vacuum-bead cushion | Integrated adaptive XELGO liner |
| Fitting method | Air removed using a hand pump | Pump-free adaptive fitting |
| Fabric liner | Removable terrycloth liner | DryClim® XELGO liner with hygiene sock |
| Range of motion | 15° dorsiflexion to 30° plantar flexion | 15° dorsiflexion to 30° plantar flexion |
| Sole system | Rocker walking sole and Achilles wedge sole | Flat walking sole and 15° Achilles wedge sole |
Adjustable Ankle Position and Range of Motion
The VACOped ankle mechanism may be configured as a fixed-position orthosis or adjusted to allow movement through a clinician-selected range. Settings extend from 15° of dorsiflexion to 30° of plantar flexion in 5° increments.
The included adjustment key is used to reposition the upper and lower range-of-motion limiters. The ankle angle, movement limits and sole configuration should only be changed according to instructions from the treating physician, surgeon, physiotherapist or orthopaedic professional.
Achilles Wedge Sole Requirement
When an Achilles tendon injury is being treated in a fixed plantar-flexed position between 15° and 30°, the supplied Achilles wedge sole is used. Do not independently change the ankle angle, range-of-motion settings or sole configuration.
Walking in a VACOped Boot? Consider an OPED EVENup Shoe Lift
A medical walking boot raises the injured side and can create a temporary difference in leg length. This uneven height may change the way you walk and place additional strain on the lower back, hips or knees.
The OPED EVENup Shoe Lift fits over the regular shoe on the non-injured side to help compensate for the height of the VACOped boot. Its adjustable lift may help create a more level and comfortable walking position during recovery.
Wear the EVENup on the shoe opposite the VACOped boot. Select the EVENup size according to the size, outsole length and shape of the regular shoe—not the size of the VACOped boot.
Conditions VACOped May Be Prescribed For
A healthcare professional may prescribe the original VACOped for conditions including:
- Achilles tendon rupture following surgical or non-surgical treatment
- Selected Achilles tendon injuries requiring protected positioning
- Achilles tendinopathy requiring immobilization
- Lower-leg fractures
- Ankle fractures
- Calcaneal or heel fractures
- Metatarsal fractures
- Severe ankle sprains
- Complex ankle ligament injuries
- Recovery following ankle joint replacement
- Recovery following upper or lower ankle arthrodesis
- Selected soft-tissue injuries requiring lower-leg or foot stabilization
Use Under Medical Direction
This is a medical orthosis intended for single-patient use. Weight-bearing status, ankle position, range of motion, wearing schedule and rehabilitation progression must be determined by the treating healthcare professional.
What Is Included?
- One original OPED VACOped orthosis with front cover and straps
- One vacuum-bead cushion with valve
- Two removable terrycloth liners
- One rocker walking sole
- One Achilles wedge sole
- One hand-operated vacuum pump
- One VACOped adjustment key
- User instructions
Two Terrycloth Liners Included
The second liner allows one liner to be washed or air dried while the other remains available for use. The vacuum cushion is transferred between the two terrycloth liners and is not placed in the washing machine.
Swimming with the Original VACOped
The plastic VACOped shell, vacuum cushion and detachable sole components may be used in a swimming pool when permission has been provided by the treating healthcare professional. The terrycloth liner absorbs water and must be changed after swimming.
Use in a Pool Only with Medical Approval
Bring the second clean, dry liner to the pool. After leaving the water, sit in a safe location, remove the wet liner, towel dry the shell and vacuum cushion and transfer the cushion into the dry liner.
Do not use the boot in natural water, at the beach or in conditions where sand, debris, waves or unstable surfaces may compromise safety.
Additional original terrycloth liners remain available while supplies last:

Between Two VACOped Sizes?
At the Small and Medium or Medium and Large size boundaries, OPED generally recommends selecting the smaller size when possible. Foot width, ankle circumference, calf circumference and overall fit should also be considered.
Contact The Physio Store before ordering when measurements are close to a size boundary or when the patient has an unusually large calf.
Upgrade the Original Boot with a XELGO Liner
Keep the Shell and Replace the Original Liner System
The original vacuum VACOped and the newer VACOped XELGO use the same standard shell and external components. A same-size XELGO liner can therefore be installed in this original boot later.
To complete the conversion, remove both the terrycloth liner and the separate vacuum cushion. The XELGO liner replaces both components, and the original hand pump is no longer required. A compatible hygiene sock should be worn between the skin and the XELGO liner.
The original shell, straps, range-of-motion mechanism and approved VACOped soles remain in use.
Cleaning and Daily Care
Remove the vacuum cushion completely before washing a terrycloth liner. Close the liner zipper and wash it according to its care label. OPED’s current guidance permits machine washing the cloth liner at up to 40°C.
Allow the liner to air dry completely. Do not place the terrycloth liner in a tumble dryer because heat may cause shrinkage.
Wipe the plastic shell, straps and soles with warm, mild soapy water and dry them with a towel. Do not machine wash the vacuum cushion, pump, shell or detachable soles.
Regularly inspect the skin for redness, bruising, pressure areas or breakdown. Stop weight bearing and contact the treating healthcare professional if pain, numbness, altered sensation, skin damage or unusual discomfort develops.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the original OPED VACOped Achilles Walking Boot?
The original OPED VACOped is an adjustable orthopaedic walking boot designed for clinician-directed treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures and selected foot, ankle and lower-leg injuries. It uses a removable terrycloth liner, a separate vacuum-bead cushion and a hand pump to create a customized fit.
Is this the original VACOped or the newer XELGO model?
This clearance product is the original vacuum-style VACOped. It uses a terrycloth liner, separate vacuum cushion and hand pump. The newer VACOped XELGO replaces those components with a pump-free adaptive liner.
Why is the original VACOped on clearance?
OPED is transitioning the standard VACOped product line to the newer XELGO liner system. The original vacuum-style boots are available at a clearance price only while remaining sizes are in stock.
How does the VACOped vacuum liner work?
The vacuum cushion contains thousands of small beads. After the cushion is shaped around the foot, ankle and lower leg, air is removed with the supplied hand pump. This holds the beads in position and creates a supportive customized fit.
Does the vacuum cushion accommodate swelling?
Yes. The valve can be opened to soften the cushion so the beads can be redistributed around changes in swelling or pressure-sensitive areas. The cushion is then reshaped and vacuumed again using the supplied pump.
What conditions may the original VACOped be prescribed for?
It may be prescribed for Achilles tendon rupture, selected Achilles tendon injuries, ankle fractures, calcaneal fractures, metatarsal fractures, severe ankle sprains, complex ligament injuries and selected post-operative foot or ankle conditions.
Can the original VACOped be used after Achilles tendon surgery?
Yes. It may be prescribed following surgical Achilles tendon repair. It may also be used during selected non-operative Achilles rupture protocols when directed by the treating healthcare professional.
Can VACOped be used for non-surgical Achilles rupture treatment?
Yes. Some non-operative Achilles rupture protocols use the VACOped to protect the tendon in a prescribed plantar-flexed position and later permit controlled ankle movement.
What range of motion does the VACOped provide?
The VACOped can be configured as a fixed-position orthosis or adjusted from 15 degrees of dorsiflexion to 30 degrees of plantar flexion in 5-degree increments.
Can I change the VACOped range-of-motion settings myself?
No. The ankle angle, range-of-motion limiters and sole configuration should only be changed according to instructions from your physician, surgeon, physiotherapist or orthopaedic professional.
Why does the VACOped include two different soles?
The Achilles wedge sole is used when the ankle must remain in a prescribed plantar-flexed position. The rocker walking sole may be introduced later when the treatment plan permits a flatter ankle position and rolling walking pattern.
When should the Achilles wedge sole be used?
The wedge sole is used when an Achilles tendon injury is being treated in a fixed plantar-flexed position between 15 and 30 degrees. Follow the sole and angle instructions provided by the treating healthcare professional.
What is included with the original VACOped?
The package includes one VACOped orthosis, one vacuum-bead cushion, two terrycloth liners, one rocker walking sole, one Achilles wedge sole, one hand pump, an adjustment key and user instructions.
Why are two terrycloth liners included?
The second liner allows one liner to be washed or dried while the other remains available for use. The vacuum cushion is removed from the fabric liner before washing and can be transferred into the clean, dry liner.
Does the original VACOped fit either leg?
Yes. The VACOped is universal and may be fitted to either the left or right lower leg.
How do I choose my VACOped size?
Select Small, Medium or Large using shoe size together with foot width, ankle circumference and calf circumference. Review all measurements in the size chart before ordering.
What size should I choose if I am between VACOped sizes?
OPED generally recommends selecting the smaller size at the Small and Medium or Medium and Large boundary when possible. Overall foot, ankle and calf measurements should also be considered.
Where can I find the size of an existing VACOped?
The size is normally marked on the bottom of the detachable sole. Replacement liners, cushions and XELGO upgrade liners should match the size of the existing boot.
Can I walk without a sole attached to the VACOped?
No. Never stand or walk in the VACOped shell unless the prescribed detachable sole is securely attached.
Can I swim while wearing the original VACOped?
Pool use may be possible when approved by the treating healthcare professional. The wet terrycloth liner should be replaced afterward with a clean, dry liner, and all components should be dried thoroughly.
Can I use the VACOped at the beach or in a lake?
Natural water, sand, waves and uneven surfaces may damage components or create a fall risk. Pool or water use should only occur with approval and instructions from the treating healthcare professional.
How do I wash the terrycloth liner?
Remove the vacuum cushion completely before washing the liner. Close the zipper, wash according to the care label and allow the liner to air dry fully. Do not tumble dry it.
Can the vacuum cushion be placed in a washing machine?
No. Do not machine wash the vacuum cushion, pump, plastic shell or detachable soles. These components should be cleaned according to the supplied OPED instructions.
Can I purchase an additional terrycloth liner?
Original VACOped terrycloth replacement liners may be available separately while supplies last. Select the same size as the VACOped shell.
Can the original VACOped be upgraded with a XELGO liner?
Yes. A same-size XELGO liner can replace the original terrycloth liner and separate vacuum cushion in the standard VACOped shell.
What must be removed when converting the original VACOped to XELGO?
Remove both the original terrycloth liner and the separate vacuum cushion. The XELGO liner replaces both components, and the hand pump is no longer used.
Can I continue using the original shell and soles after installing XELGO?
Yes. The standard VACOped shell, straps, range-of-motion mechanism and approved detachable soles remain in use. The replacement XELGO liner must match the boot size.
Is the XELGO liner included with this clearance boot?
No. This clearance boot includes the original vacuum cushion and terrycloth liner system. The XELGO replacement liner is sold separately.
Why might I use an OPED EVENup Shoe Lift with VACOped?
A medical walking boot raises the injured side and may create a temporary leg-length difference. The EVENup fits over the regular shoe on the opposite side to help create a more level walking position.
Is the VACOped designed for running or sports?
No. The VACOped is not designed for running, jumping, fast walking or other dynamic sporting stresses.
Can the VACOped be worn directly over an open wound?
No. Do not wear the orthosis directly over an open wound. Wounds must be appropriately dressed and managed according to medical instructions.
What should I do if the VACOped causes numbness or a pressure point?
Stop weight bearing and check the fit. The vacuum cushion may need to be softened and reshaped, but persistent pain, numbness, discolouration, skin irritation or pressure should be assessed by the treating healthcare professional.
Can I purchase the VACOped without a prescription?
The boot can generally be purchased directly. A prescription may be required for insurance reimbursement or applicable tax-exempt processing.

It took a few days to find ways to get the pressure off the top of my foot when I was in position 3. It was super painful! I ended up adding padding by folding a large amount of pro wrap and taping it to the top of my foot to prevent pressure sores from developing. Clearly a design flaw of the top piece for those with high arches.
The boot has otherwise done its job and I really like having the ROM as I make my way closer to walking naturally!
