Description

The POWERbreathe Plus Inspiratory Muscle Trainer (IMT) – Heavy Resistance is the most challenging model in the POWERbreathe Plus mechanical breathing trainer range. It is designed for advanced users who already have strong inspiratory muscles and have reached the highest load setting on the POWERbreathe Plus Medium Resistance model.

Inspiratory Muscle Training, often called IMT, works by creating resistance as you breathe in. This makes the diaphragm and other inspiratory muscles work harder, similar to resistance training for the rest of the body. Over time, consistent training may help improve breathing muscle strength, breathing stamina, and tolerance during exercise or performance.

Important: Heavy Resistance Is Not for Beginners

The POWERbreathe Plus Heavy Resistance model is highly demanding on the breathing muscles. It should only be chosen by users who have already reached the highest setting on the POWERbreathe Plus Medium Resistance model. If you start too high, training may be too difficult and your technique may suffer.

Best Suited For

  • Advanced POWERbreathe users
  • Very fit individuals with strong breathing muscles
  • Athletes who have outgrown the Medium Resistance model
  • Performance-focused users who require a higher training load
  • Users who can already complete training comfortably at the top level of Medium Resistance

Not Recommended For

This Heavy Resistance model is generally not suitable for people with breathing problems, significant respiratory weakness, COPD, asthma flare-ups, recent surgery, low fitness, or anyone new to inspiratory muscle training. For a lower starting load, consider the POWERbreathe Medic Plus or POWERbreathe Plus Light Resistance model.

How POWERbreathe Plus Heavy Works

The POWERbreathe Plus Heavy Resistance uses a calibrated, spring-loaded pressure-threshold valve. When you breathe in through the mouthpiece, your inspiratory muscles must generate enough pressure to open the valve. This creates a measurable training load on your in-breath.

The Heavy Resistance model has the widest load range and largest jumps between training levels in the Plus series. This makes it the most challenging model and the best match for users who need more resistance than the Medium model can provide.

Breathing training with POWERbreathe focuses on strengthening the muscles used for breathing, not the lungs themselves. Your lungs are organs, while the diaphragm and intercostal muscles are muscles that help move air in.

Training Routine

30 Breaths, Twice Per Day

The standard POWERbreathe training routine is 30 breaths, twice per day. For performance training, the resistance should feel challenging while still allowing good technique. If you can complete 30 breaths too easily, increase the load gradually.

Training should not be painful. Stop using the device and speak with a healthcare professional if you experience chest discomfort, dizziness that does not settle with rest, unusual shortness of breath, pain, or symptoms that concern you.

Choosing the Right POWERbreathe Plus Model

Choose Medic Plus

Choose the Medic Plus if you need the lowest starting resistance, have more significant breathing weakness, or are using inspiratory muscle training as part of a medical or clinician-guided program.

Choose Light Resistance

Choose Light Resistance if you are newer to breathing training, less physically active, have mild to moderate breathing concerns, or want a more gradual starting point. Clinically, the Light model is often a better fit for many teens, many women, older adults, and users who are unsure where to start.

Choose Medium Resistance

Choose Medium Resistance if you exercise or are physically active for more than 2.5 hours per week, have no significant breathing problems, or are moderately fit to very fit and want a higher training range than the Light model.

Choose Heavy Resistance Only After Medium

The Heavy Resistance model should only be chosen after you have reached the highest load setting on the POWERbreathe Plus Medium Resistance model. Starting too high may make training too difficult and reduce the benefit of proper technique.

Normal Maximum Inspiratory Pressure

Inspiratory muscle training is often based on a percentage of a person’s Maximum Inspiratory Pressure, also called MIP. A common target range used in training is approximately 60–80% of maximum inspiratory strength, although many clinicians start lower to help users learn proper technique.

As a general guide, some users start around half of their predicted maximum inspiratory pressure. These values are for healthy individuals and are not a substitute for clinical testing. If you have a respiratory condition, recent illness, recent surgery, or reduced exercise tolerance, you may need to start at a lower level.
