Description

The POWERbreathe Plus Inspiratory Muscle Trainer (IMT) – Medium Resistance is a handheld breathing trainer designed to strengthen the muscles you use to breathe in. Using adjustable pressure-threshold resistance, it challenges the diaphragm and other inspiratory muscles in a controlled way, similar to resistance training for the rest of the body.

The Medium Resistance model is designed for people who are already physically active or moderately fit to very fit. It offers a broader resistance range than the Light model, starting at 23 cmH2O and increasing up to 186 cmH2O as your breathing muscles adapt and become stronger.

Why Choose Medium Resistance?

The POWERbreathe Plus Medium Resistance model is a strong choice when the Light model may not provide enough training challenge. It is commonly chosen by active adults, athletes, performers, and people who want a higher-load inspiratory muscle training device.

Best Suited For

  • Physically active adults
  • Moderately fit to very fit users
  • Athletes looking to train breathing strength and stamina
  • Singers, wind-instrument players, and performers working on breath control
  • Users who have outgrown a lower-resistance breathing trainer
  • People using IMT as part of a clinician-guided respiratory or rehabilitation program

Choosing the Right Resistance Matters

The Medium Resistance model is not the gentlest starting point. If you have significant breathing problems, low fitness, are new to inspiratory muscle training, or are unsure which model is right for you, the Medic Plus or Light Resistance model may be more appropriate. Speak with a healthcare professional if you are using IMT for a medical condition.

How POWERbreathe Plus Medium Works

The POWERbreathe Plus Medium Resistance uses a precisely calibrated, spring-loaded pressure-threshold valve. When you breathe in through the mouthpiece, your inspiratory muscles must generate enough force to open the valve. This creates a measurable training load on your in-breath.

As your breathing muscles become stronger, you can gradually increase the resistance level. This progressive loading approach helps make inspiratory muscle training more challenging over time.

Breathing training with the POWERbreathe Plus Medium focuses on strengthening the muscles used for breathing, not the lungs themselves. Your lungs are organs, while the diaphragm and intercostal muscles are muscles that help move air in and out.

How Often Should You Train?

Standard POWERbreathe Routine

The standard POWERbreathe training routine is 30 breaths, twice per day. Train at a resistance that feels challenging but still allows you to complete the set with good technique. Increase the resistance gradually as training becomes easier.

Many users notice changes after consistent use over several weeks. Training should not be painful. If you feel dizzy, develop chest discomfort, experience unusual breathlessness, or feel unwell, stop training and speak with a healthcare professional.

How to Choose the Right POWERbreathe Plus Model

Choose Medic Plus

Choose the Medic Plus if you need the lowest starting resistance, have more significant breathing weakness, or are using inspiratory muscle training as part of a medical or clinician-guided program.

Choose Light Resistance

Choose Light Resistance if you are newer to breathing training, less physically active, have mild to moderate breathing concerns, or want a more gradual starting point. Clinically, the Light model is often a better fit for many teens, many women, older adults, and users who are unsure where to start.

Choose Medium Resistance

Choose Medium Resistance if you exercise or are physically active for more than 2.5 hours per week, have no significant breathing problems, or are moderately fit to very fit and want a higher training range.

Choose Heavy Resistance Carefully

The Heavy Resistance model should generally only be chosen after you have reached the highest load setting on the POWERbreathe Plus Medium Resistance model. Starting too high can make training too difficult and may reduce the benefit of proper technique.

Normal Maximum Inspiratory Pressure

Inspiratory muscle training is often based on a percentage of a person’s Maximum Inspiratory Pressure, also called MIP. A common target range used in training is approximately 60–80% of maximum inspiratory strength, although many clinicians start lower to help users learn proper technique.

As a general guide, some users start around half of their predicted maximum inspiratory pressure. These values are for healthy individuals and are not a substitute for clinical testing. If you have a respiratory condition, recent illness, recent surgery, or reduced exercise tolerance, you may need to start at a lower level.

Age GroupMen: Normal Maximum Inspiratory PressureWomen: Normal Maximum Inspiratory Pressure

50–59 years108 cmH2O80 cmH2O
60–69 years93 cmH2O75 cmH2O
70–83 years76 cmH2O65 cmH2O

For example, if a healthy 55-year-old male has an estimated maximum inspiratory pressure of 108 cmH2O, half of that value would be 54 cmH2O. On the POWERbreathe Plus Medium Resistance model, that would be close to level 2. This is only a general example and should not replace professional guidance.

Please note: precise load settings may vary slightly due to the analogue nature of the calibrated spring tensioner and the effect of inspiratory flow rate on spring compression. This is normal for spring-loaded threshold devices.

  1. Much cheaper than Amazon for the exact same product.

  2. Physiostore was very responsive. I use the Powerbreathe every other day to help control mild asthma and keep my blood pressure low. It really helps with both. After a cleaning, I lost the internal spring and the use of my PowerBreathe. I ordered a replacement and requested a new spring. Both items quickly. I now have 2 PowerBreathes, thanks to Physiostore going the extra mile. I really didn’t expect the spring.

  3. I’m very satisfied with my experience with the Physio Store. The powerbreathe arrived quickly and in perfect conditions

  4. As an ex-smoker it was always difficult to take deep breaths that would fill to the bottom of my lungs. After 2 weeks of using thePowerBreathe unit, I can deep breathe! Amazing!
