Heating Instructions
Hydrocollator Use (Recommended for Clinics)
The CalorDerm CalorPak™ is designed primarily for use in hydrocollator tanks and professional hot water bath systems.
- For first use, soak the pack in water for 16–20 hours to fully hydrate.
- Ensure the pack is fully immersed in water.
- Maintain water temperature at approximately 160°F (71°C).
- The pack may remain in the hydrocollator tank indefinitely, provided proper water levels and temperature are maintained.
Regular monitoring of water level and temperature helps prolong the lifespan of the heat pack and ensures consistent therapeutic performance.
Alternative Heating Methods (Water Immersion Only)
If a hydrocollator tank is not available, the CalorPak™ may be heated using water immersion methods:
- Microwave: Place the pack in a microwave-safe container filled with water. Heat until the water reaches approximately 160°F (71°C). Never heat the pack dry.
- Stovetop: Bring water to a boil, then reduce to low and maintain approximately 160°F (71°C) before placing the pack in the water.
Always wrap the heated pack fully in a towel or terry cloth cover before applying to skin. Do not apply heat for more than 30 minutes. Risk of burns exists if overheated.
The CalorDerm CalorPak™ includes an 12-Month Limited Clinical Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship when used according to proper heating guidelines.
Hydrocollator Maintenance Guide for Clinics
Proper hydrocollator maintenance is essential to ensure consistent therapeutic heat, prevent odor, and prolong the lifespan of your CalorDerm CalorPak™ heat packs.
Water Level & Temperature
- Maintain water temperature at approximately 160°F (71°C).
- Ensure all heat packs remain fully submerged at all times.
- Check water levels daily and top up as needed.
Packs that are partially exposed to air can dry out, degrade prematurely, and develop odor over time.
Water Replacement Schedule
- Change hydrocollator water every 2–4 weeks.
- High-volume clinics should consider changing water every 2 weeks.
- Immediately replace water if it becomes cloudy, discoloured, or develops odor.
Tank Cleaning
- Drain the tank completely during scheduled water changes.
- Wipe interior surfaces to remove mineral buildup and residue.
- Rinse thoroughly before refilling.
- Use distilled water in areas with hard water to reduce mineral deposits.
Do not add bleach or harsh chemicals directly to hydrocollator water. Only use manufacturer-approved cleaning solutions during full tank cleaning.
Best Practices for Longevity
- Keep the hydrocollator lid closed when not in use.
- Rotate packs regularly in high-volume environments.
- Inspect packs periodically for signs of wear.
Proper tank maintenance not only protects your CalorPaks™ but also helps prevent odor issues and ensures safe, hygienic treatment for patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to soak the pack before first use?
Yes. For first use, soak the pack in water for 16–20 hours to allow it to fully absorb water before heating.

Yes. CalorDerm CalorPak™ is designed specifically for hydrocollator units and hot water bath heating systems commonly used in physiotherapy clinics.
Can the CalorPak remain in the hydrocollator tank when not in use?
Yes. CalorPaks can remain in the hydrocollator tank indefinitely as long as proper water levels and recommended temperature (approximately 160°F / 71°C) are maintained. Regular water maintenance helps prolong pack lifespan.
Can I place the pack directly on the skin?

How long does the CalorPak stay hot during treatment?
When properly heated and wrapped in towels, the CalorPak provides therapeutic moist heat for up to 30 minutes.
Should I store the heat pack in the freezer when not in use?
Yes. If the pack is not being stored in a hydrocollator tank, placing it in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer can help prolong its lifespan and maintain proper hydration.
When should I use the 10" x 12" Standard CalorPak?
The 10" x 12" Standard CalorPak is ideal for lumbar spine, mid-back, hips, quadriceps, and calf treatments. It is one of the most versatile and commonly stocked sizes in physiotherapy clinics.
When should I choose the Neck (60 cm) version instead?
The 60 cm Neck CalorPak is better suited for cervical spine, upper trapezius, and shoulder treatments because it contours and drapes around the neck more effectively than the standard rectangular size.
When is the Oversized 15" x 24" CalorPak recommended?
The Oversized version is commonly used for full back applications or larger muscle groups. It provides broader coverage and is especially useful in high-volume clinic environments.
Is the Standard size commonly used in physiotherapy clinics?
Yes. The 10" x 12" size is one of the most frequently stocked moist heat packs because it works well for lumbar and extremity treatments.
How does CalorDerm compare to Chattanooga HotPacs?
CalorDerm CalorPak™ delivers comparable professional-grade moist heat performance, reinforced corner loops, competitive pricing, and includes an extended 18-month warranty backed by a Canadian distributor.

CalorDerm offers professional clinic-grade construction, strong value pricing, reinforced durability, hydrocollator compatibility, and extended 18-month warranty coverage designed specifically for healthcare environments.
My heat pack has developed an odor. What causes this?
Odor is typically caused by hydrocollator tank maintenance rather than the heat pack itself. If tank water is not changed regularly or becomes contaminated, packs can absorb odor from the water.
How often should hydrocollator water be changed?
Water should generally be replaced every 2–4 weeks. High-volume clinics may benefit from changing water every 2 weeks. Water should be changed immediately if it becomes cloudy, discoloured, or develops an odor.
Can CalorPaks remain in the hydrocollator tank indefinitely?
Yes. CalorPaks™ are designed to remain fully submerged in a properly maintained hydrocollator tank. Ensure water temperature is maintained at approximately 160°F (71°C) and water levels are checked regularly.
Why do heat packs sometimes smell even when the tank is hot?
While hydrocollators operate at therapeutic temperatures, bacteria and organic residue can still develop over time if water is not changed regularly. Proper tank cleaning and scheduled water replacement are essential.
What happens if the pack is not fully submerged?
Packs that are partially exposed to air can dry out, degrade prematurely, and may develop odor. Always ensure packs remain fully immersed in water.
Can I add bleach or disinfectant directly to the hydrocollator water?
No. Harsh chemicals should not be added directly to hydrocollator water. Only use manufacturer-approved cleaning solutions during full tank cleaning and rinse thoroughly before refilling.
Does hard water affect heat pack performance?
Yes. Hard water can contribute to mineral buildup inside the tank and on packs over time. In areas with hard water, using distilled water may help reduce residue and prolong pack lifespan.
Is odor covered under warranty?
Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. Odor resulting from hydrocollator maintenance issues or improper use is not considered a manufacturing defect.
What is the best way to prolong the lifespan of CalorPaks?
Maintain consistent water temperature (approx. 160°F / 71°C), change tank water regularly, keep packs fully submerged, and clean the tank during scheduled water changes.
