Adjustable Air Compression for Foot and Ankle Recovery

The Össur Formfit® Walker Air Standard is a tall pneumatic medical walking boot designed to immobilize the foot and ankle during clinician-directed recovery from stable fractures, Grade 2 and 3 ankle sprains, soft-tissue injuries, and post-operative or rehabilitation care.

Stable Walking Support with a Breathable Liner

An integrated air system allows compression to be adjusted as swelling and fit requirements change. A low, wide rocker sole and shock-absorbing heel help support a more stable walking pattern, while the removable seamless liner provides breathable comfort. One universal boot fits the left or right foot.

Description

Supportive Immobilization with Adjustable Air Compression

The Össur Formfit® Walker Air Standard is a tall pneumatic walking boot designed to restrict movement of the foot and ankle during recovery. Its integrated air chamber allows the level of compression to be adjusted for a secure, supportive fit as swelling or lower-leg volume changes.

The standard-height design extends above the ankle to provide greater lower-leg and ankle immobilization than a low-top walking boot. It may be used during clinician-directed recovery from stable fractures, significant ankle sprains, soft-tissue injuries, trauma, surgery or rehabilitation.

When Is the Formfit Walker Air Standard Used?

This walking boot may be recommended for foot and ankle conditions that benefit from motion restriction, including:

  • Grade 2 and Grade 3 ankle sprains
  • Stable foot or ankle fractures
  • Soft-tissue injuries
  • Post-operative immobilization
  • Recovery following trauma
  • Clinician-directed rehabilitation

The appropriate boot, wearing schedule and permitted level of weight-bearing should be determined by a qualified healthcare professional.

Breathable seamless linerProvides cushioning and helps reduce irritation from prominent internal seams.
Universal designOne boot can be worn on either the left or right foot.

Weight-Bearing Must Be Authorized

A rocker sole does not automatically mean that full weight-bearing is permitted. Follow the instructions provided by your physician, surgeon, physiotherapist or other treating healthcare professional. Crutches, a walker or another mobility aid may still be required.

How the Adjustable Air System Works

The pneumatic chamber is inflated only after the foot is correctly positioned, the liner is closed and the straps are fastened. Turn the valve clockwise and repeatedly press the air bladder until the boot feels comfortably supportive.

To reduce compression, turn the valve counterclockwise and allow air to escape. The air chamber should also be deflated before removing the boot.

Do Not Overinflate the Boot

The boot should feel snug and supportive without causing pain, numbness, tingling, excessive pressure, skin discolouration or changes in circulation. Immediately reduce the air pressure if the boot feels too tight. Contact a healthcare professional if symptoms continue.

Air inside the chamber may expand when travelling to a higher altitude. Check the fit and release air as necessary to maintain comfortable compression.

How to Fit the Formfit Walker Air Standard

  1. Sit in a stable chair before applying the boot.
  2. Unfasten the straps and remove the liner from the outer walker shell.
  3. Place the lower leg and foot inside the liner and close the liner securely.
  4. Insert the foot into the walker with the heel fully seated against the back of the shell.
  5. Position the foot at approximately 90 degrees to the lower leg. There should not be a gap between the heel and the back of the boot.
  6. Confirm that the upright supports are centred beside the ankle.
  7. Attach the liner to the walker shell and fasten the straps so they feel snug but not excessively tight.
  8. Turn the air valve clockwise and press the air bladder until comfortable support is achieved.
  9. Recheck circulation, skin comfort and heel position before standing or walking.

Choosing the Correct Size

Select the boot using the patient’s regular shoe size. The heel should sit completely against the back of the boot and the toes should remain supported by the footbed. Swelling, dressings and foot width may also affect the final fit.

Important Safety Information

Do not remove the walking boot unless instructed by a healthcare professional. Regular clinical supervision is particularly important for people with peripheral vascular disease, neuropathy, diabetes-related loss of sensation or sensitive skin.

Check the skin and circulation regularly. Stop using the boot and contact a healthcare professional if you experience increasing pain, numbness, skin irritation, discolouration, excessive pressure, unusual swelling or another unexpected reaction.

Cover open wounds or damaged skin with an appropriate dressing before applying the boot. Use extra caution on wet, icy, loose or slippery surfaces.
