Low-Top Pneumatic Support for Foot Injuries

The Össur Formfit® Walker Air Short is a low-top medical walking boot designed to immobilize and protect the foot during clinician-directed recovery from stable foot fractures, soft-tissue injuries, trauma, surgery or rehabilitation.

Adjustable Compression in a Shorter Walking Boot

An integrated air system provides adjustable compression as swelling and fit requirements change. The low, wide rocker sole helps support a stable walking pattern, while the shock-absorbing sole and breathable seamless liner improve comfort. One universal boot fits the left or right foot.

Description

Short Pneumatic Walking Boot for Foot Immobilization

The Össur Formfit® Walker Air Short is a low-top pneumatic walking boot designed to restrict movement and protect the foot during recovery. Its shorter construction provides focused support around the foot while leaving more of the lower leg uncovered than a standard-height walking boot.

An integrated air chamber allows compression to be adjusted after the foot is correctly positioned and the straps are secured. This helps create a supportive fit as swelling or foot volume changes during recovery.

When Is the Short Formfit Walker Air Used?

Össur identifies the low-top walker for foot conditions that may benefit from motion restriction, including:

  • Stable foot fractures
  • Soft-tissue injuries of the foot
  • Post-operative foot immobilization
  • Recovery following trauma
  • Clinician-directed rehabilitation

The correct boot height, wearing schedule and permitted level of weight-bearing should be determined by a qualified healthcare professional.

Short Walking Boot or Tall Walking Boot?

The short version is intended primarily for injuries involving the foot. It provides less control of the ankle and lower leg than the standard-height version.

Össur lists Grade 2 and Grade 3 ankle sprains under the indications for its high-top walker rather than its low-top walker. Customers recovering from a significant ankle injury should confirm the appropriate boot height with their healthcare professional before ordering.

Features of the Össur Formfit Walker Air Short

FeatureHow It Helps
Short low-top designProvides focused immobilization and protection around the foot with less lower-leg coverage than the standard-height model.
Integrated pneumatic systemAllows adjustable compression around the foot for a supportive and adaptable fit.
Built-in inflation pumpAllows air to be added after the liner and straps have been properly secured.
Pressure-release valveAllows air pressure to be reduced when the boot feels too tight or before removing it.
Low, wide rocker soleHelps promote a stable and more natural walking pattern when weight-bearing has been authorized.
Shock-absorbing soleHelps reduce impact at heel strike while walking.
Breathable seamless linerProvides cushioning while reducing irritation from prominent internal seams.
Universal constructionOne boot can be fitted to either the left or right foot.

Weight-Bearing Requires Clinical Direction

The rocker sole does not automatically mean that full weight-bearing is permitted. Follow the instructions provided by your physician, surgeon, physiotherapist or other treating healthcare professional. Crutches, a walker or another mobility aid may still be required.

How the Adjustable Air System Works

Inflate the air chamber only after the foot is fully seated inside the boot, the liner is closed and the straps are securely fastened. Turn the valve clockwise and press the air bladder repeatedly until the desired level of comfortable compression is reached.

To reduce compression, turn the valve counterclockwise and allow air to escape. The chamber should also be deflated before the boot is removed.

Do Not Overinflate the Air Chamber

The boot should feel comfortably snug without causing pain, numbness, tingling, excessive pressure, skin discolouration or changes in circulation. Release air and adjust the straps immediately if the device feels too tight.

Air inside the chamber may expand when travelling to a higher altitude. Recheck the fit and release air as necessary to maintain comfortable compression.

How to Fit the Formfit Walker Air Short

  1. Sit in a stable chair before applying the boot.
  2. Unfasten the straps and remove the liner from the walker shell.
  3. Place the foot and lower leg inside the liner and close the liner in the illustrated order.
  4. Insert the foot into the walker shell.
  5. Ensure the heel is completely seated against the back of the shell.
  6. Position the foot at approximately 90 degrees to the lower leg.
  7. Confirm that there is no gap between the heel and the back of the shell.
  8. Add the supplied fitting pads where needed to address rubbing or unwanted space.
  9. Attach the walker shell to the liner and fasten the straps securely.
  10. Turn the valve clockwise and press the air bladder until comfortable support is achieved.
  11. Check skin comfort and circulation before standing or walking.

Choosing the Correct Size

Select the boot according to the patient’s regular shoe size. The heel should sit fully against the back of the shell and the toes should remain supported by the footbed. Foot width, swelling and dressings may affect the final fit.
